Searsport, Maine

Another great Maine coastal town is Searsport. I feel I need to be a ships captain when I travel to this town!  The town and deep water seaport are located at the confluence of the Penobscot River estuary and the Penobscot Bay immediately Southeast of Sears Island and Cape Jellison in Waldo County.  The population was 2,615 at the 2010 census. Searsport includes the village of North Searsport. The town is known as “the home of the famous sea captains” and the “Antique Capital of Maine”.[1]

Searsport is Maine’s second largest deep water port and is ideally located from the point of view of railroad, wood products and other development interests. Indeed, the town became the Penobscot Bay shipping terminus for the Northern Maine Seaport Railroad, a line opened in 1905 by the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad, which sent potatoes, timber and other products from here by boat, and loaded coal for use by its locomotives, without having to arrange rates with the Maine Central Railroad.[1]

Searsport is home to Sears Island and talking a trip (by vehicle) hear to walk the paths is worth the drive. Once a talk about being a site for a liquid natural gas terminal which never came to be due to lack of public support and protecting the natural resources of this beautiful island and coastline, Sears Island is now home to trails and walkways. Freinds of Sears Island is committed to the dual purposes of protecting the natural & cultural resources of Sears Island and maintaining public accessibility for recreation and education.

Searsport is also home to the Penobscot Marine Museum which mission is to is to preserve, interpret, and celebrate the maritime culture of the Penobscot Bay region and beyond through collections, education, and community engagement.

Need to find a book to read?  Check out the beautiful Carver Memorial Library right in town.  I just love the look of this library.

Relax and enjoy this nationally ranked Victorian Inn and English-style Tavern. [2]   The Homeport Inn and Tavern
